Breaks

I'm going to review The Emerald City of Oz, but first I've got to read it again. The small stories in stories that Baum likes ran amok in this book. He also works with a dual plot line which didn't help with the pacing. After the next blog though I'm not going to do any more Oz books until much later. As entertaining as they are, the simple format repeated does not for a good read make. I'm thinking about going into the steampunk realm and picking a handful from there. We shall see. For now, Please to enjoy this video.

The Road to Oz

In this book we learn that if you just wander away with large shaggy strangers then you eventually end up at fantastic royal birthday parties. But a good thing came from this, the Shaggy man! the ultimate hobo, always good natured fellow, and one of my favourite characters so far in the series. He has a charm so everyone loves him, which justifies Dorothy trusting him so much.

Baum wants to write about other things, if only the tiny children who control him would allow it. I'm glad Baum was pressured into writing more, That's right! I'm glad! *shakes fist* By the By, this post might be slightly more incoherent than usual as I am rather sleepy and full of apple juice.

Earthquakes in California! How novel an idea..wait.. Baum wrote this book soon after the earthquake of 1906. I can imagine he was watching cracks form and fill from his writing room window and thought to himself "my wouldn't that make a loverly place to toss two children and a horse?" Man, what a creepy guy. *whistles*

Ozma of Oz

I'll say this straight off. I enjoyed Ozma of Oz. the characters were silly but that's alright because they each had their own personality quirks. Only qualm I have is that it wasnt really about Ozma very much. Otherwise it was a well written and plotted out fable. It turned where you thought it should and there were a few new, interesting bits for flavour.

What a marvelous land it is indeed where the entire story can be drawn through with high walled gender divisions and at the end the main character, who is a rough and tumble boy child, can be turned into a luscious perfect princess and no one thinks this odd. He/she also adjusts to it rather well as, like the last story, soon after everyone gets what they want Baum takes a few pages to give a rough idea of an epilogue and then runs off to compete in somersault contest or something as important.

Morning folks!

As I am out of work and without a way to become re-employed, I'm going to try and read one book every day, or every weekday. We'll see how well this keeps me from going into a coma, or insane, or an insane coma, which is like a regular coma but with more bees. My first book is 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'.
